I took the lens off my DSLR and held the sensor directly over the eyepiece on my sons's telescope and was able to drop the depth of field across the surface of the moon. You can see the back edge is in focus, but the face is soft.
And the reverse here where the face is sharp but the back edges are soft.

Thanks. After trying to focus my lens and focus the telescope with little success, it dawned on my that shooting through two lenses was a bit redundant and by taking my lens off, I also eliminated any f stop.
